The Charlotte Sting, a sister team to the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, were one of the founding franchises of the WNBA in 1997. However, when the NBA’s Hornets relocated to New Orleans in 2002, the Sting were disbanded soon thereafter in 2007.
With the recent meteoric rise of the WNBA, fans have been calling for a return to the Queen City. Now, their wish just might come true. There has been an official bid submitted to the WNBA for an expansion franchise in Charlotte. And, Hornets fans will be pleased to know that the Hornets organization–and their ownership–are fully backing this bid.
Whether the bid will be successful is yet to be seen, but there’s no doubt that the city would be excited to welcome a new professional franchise. And maybe–just maybe–it could represent a new era of basketball in Charlotte, one where our teams see years of success and support.
